Program:
Design a desert home in Arizona for architect Phil Hawes. Use adobe and ferro-cement. The experience of sky should be prevalent throughout the house. Good views of the desert landscape is important. Possibly include indoor streams and ponds. Design with the sun in mind, accounting for its daily path and seasonal changes. Floor plan is approximately 5,000 square feet.
Solution:
The BioHaus I designed takes advantage of passive solar design for heating and cooling of the house. The roof is sloped high to low from the south to the north, providing more space for windows on the south side. In the winters, this allows plenty of sunlight into the house for natural heating during the day. In the hot summers, the sun is at a greater angle and overhangs prevent excessive sunlight from heating the house. The thick adobe walls provide excellent insulation throughout the seasons. The layout of the house is designed to match the times the room are used throughout the day. In the east, where the sun rises, the kitchen and dining areas receive the most morning sunlight. The middle area is where the living areas and work studios are located. Bedrooms are located in the west, to take advantage of the beautiful views of the sunset.
